The new system that helps for people with disabilities to operate wheelchairs, computers and other devices with the help of their tongue is known as the tongue driven system. This technology is most useful for the person who have spinal cord injuries to move anywhere and lead a independent lives. The only thing needed is the individuals have to move the tongue while operating this system. It is very essential for the persons with paralyzed limbs.
The process of tongue driven system consists of a tiny magnet which is attached to the persons tongue by implantation, adhesive or piercing. This technology is very helpful for the disabled persons to move a mouse of the computer or a powered wheelchair with the help of their tongue. The magnet in this system is very small in size like the grain of rice. Through cranial nerve the tongue and the brain has the direct connection, while the other parts like feet and hands are connected to brain through spinal cord. So only the scientists choose tongue to operate this system. The tongue will remain to activate the system if the person has a damage or severe injure in spinal cord. Also the movements of tongue are fast and accurate and it does not require much thinking, effort and concentration.
The only technology which is a touch free,non invasive and wireless that does not needs any surgery for its operation is the tongue driven system. The scientists also test this system to the persons with severe disabilities. The next step of this technology to develop a software for operating the tongue driven system to various devices like text generators, speech synthesizers and readers. Also the researchers are planning to improve the system that allows an individual to eat, sleep, talk or to mdo any other activities in their routine life.
