The latest technology that uses computerised methods to identify the person with the help of their physical and behavioural characteristics is called as biometric technology. This technology is a developing one due to the demand to identify the concerns in international, business and also for personal security. Biometric is more secure than the passport photo or pin number. It requires fingerprints, face and eye maps as keys for identifying the features. It is popular from access in buildings to security in laptops for identifying passports and cards.
Most popularly useful keys in biometric technology are face, iris (eyes) and fingerprint authentication. The face recognition is one of the popular term in this advanced technology. Faces are considered as the most visible identifiers for humans and it is very useful for people to identify one another. 2D face recognition needs key points that present on the face, to identify the unique person. This can be possible by using the photograph or the live image of the specific person, and this method is mostly useful for issuing the passports. Face recognition is sometimes used by some authorities to scan the crowds and identify the specific face that is previously stored on the database.
Iris scanning is another technology of biometric feature which is nothing but the recognition through the eyes. It is considered as the most accurate term in biometrics. Iris is the coloured part of the eye and the scanning process is helpful to measure the pattern of the iris. The tissue in eye is a unique thing and it does not change at anytime. Also it is different for every eye. The reading may be performing from the outer edge by the iris scanners to detect and plot the markings. The data about the eye is saved and stored in a computer memory that helps to verify the eye when it is scanned in future. Although it is an advanced technology but it is not suitable for the people who use cantaract lences.
The fingerprints technology is another important biometric technology but it is the oldest term. The methods for this technology has come from long way through ink and paper. By using the sensor plate, the fingerprint can be read electronically. The skin has corrugated ridges which are non-continuous and leads a pattern that has minutiae. In order to form the template this minutiae can be plotted and joined up, and this template can be stored in the computer to compare the fingerprints in future. Sometimes it is possible for the wrong identification because of any injuries.
In the process of biometric technology, the sample is compared with the data that is previously stored in the computer. This comparison is required to verify the unique resemblance of an individual. In the fingerprint authentication the fingers are scanned individually or together as slaps. The multimodal biometric system is one that uses many sensor types or biometric characteristics. Finally we conclude that the biometric technology has many advantages, but sometimes it is dangerous because of the wrong identification.
